The qualification

What are International GCSEs?

International GCSEs (commonly referred to as IGCSEs by parents and schools) are internationally recognised qualifications designed for students aged 14 to 16. They sit within the British education system as the standard qualification before A Levels, equivalent to Year 10 and Year 11 in the UK, or Grades 9 and 10 in South Africa.

Two major UK exam boards administer International GCSEs globally: Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) and Pearson Edexcel. Both are regulated by Ofqual in the UK and accepted by universities worldwide. Over 10,000 schools across 160 countries offer these qualifications, and more than a million students sit International GCSE exams each year.

The qualification covers a broad range of over 70 subjects. Students typically take eight or nine International GCSEs, building a foundation across languages, sciences, mathematics, humanities, and elective subjects before narrowing their focus at A Level.

Grading follows the A* to G scale (with A* being the highest) under Cambridge, while Pearson Edexcel uses the 9 to 1 numerical scale. Both grading systems carry equal weight for university admissions.

International GCSEs differ from UK GCSEs in one key way: the curriculum is set in a global context rather than a UK-specific one. Geography papers use maps from countries beyond Britain. Literature syllabuses draw on texts from multiple traditions. This international framing makes the qualification a stronger fit for students studying outside the UK or preparing for university in multiple countries.

Universities across the UK, South Africa, the United States, Canada, Australia, and Europe accept International GCSEs as entry requirements. In the UK, they are considered equivalent to domestic GCSEs for admissions purposes. In South Africa, both Cambridge and Edexcel International GCSEs are accepted by all major universities.

Exam pathways

Two International GCSE pathways: Pearson Edexcel and Cambridge*

CambriLearn students can pursue International GCSEs through two exam boards. Each has distinct advantages depending on your child's circumstances.

Pearson Edexcel

CambriLearn is an accredited Pearson Edexcel examination centre. Students register and prepare for exams directly through CambriLearn.

The biggest practical advantage: Edexcel International GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics assess practical understanding through written examination papers. Students do not need physical access to a laboratory. This matters for families studying from home or locations where lab access is limited.

Edexcel International GCSEs use the 9 to 1 grading scale, aligned with the current UK GCSE system. All qualifications are Ofqual-regulated and accepted by UCAS. Every Russell Group university accepts them.

Cambridge* pathway

70+ subjects including 30 languages. Broader subject range than Edexcel.

Private candidates: Students write exams at independently registered examination centres worldwide.

Science practicals: Cambridge science subjects include a practical assessment component. Lab access is required.

Grading: A* to G scale. Exam sessions in May/June and October/November.

International GCSE vs GCSE: what is the difference?

Both are respected British qualifications, but they serve different contexts.

The GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) is the domestic UK qualification taken by students in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland at the end of Year 11. It is tied to the UK national curriculum, with content often referencing UK-specific contexts, case studies, and cultural references.

The International GCSE adapts this framework for a global student body. Content is set in an international context. Assessment methods accommodate students in different countries and educational settings. Some subjects offer Core and Extended tiers to serve a wider range of ability levels.

For university admissions, both qualifications carry equal weight. UK universities treat International GCSEs as equivalent to domestic GCSEs. South African universities accept both. A grade C or above in International GCSE English as a Second Language is accepted by many UK universities as proof of English proficiency.

The choice between GCSE and International GCSE comes down to where a student is studying. Students inside the UK state school system take GCSEs. Students outside the UK, or studying through international or online schools, take International GCSEs.

Where International GCSEs take your child

International GCSEs and A Levels are among the most widely accepted pre-university qualifications in the world. CambriLearn graduates have secured places at universities across the United Kingdom (Russell Group including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, Edinburgh), South Africa (all major universities), the United States, Australia, Canada, and across Europe.

For students in South Africa, British qualifications convert to university admission points through a well-documented process. South African admissions offices are familiar with International GCSEs and A Levels, and CambriLearn's academic team supports families through the conversion and application process.

How International GCSE exams work

International GCSE exams are external examinations set and marked by the relevant exam board (Pearson Edexcel or Cambridge Assessment International Education). CambriLearn teaches the curriculum and prepares students; the exams are administered independently.

For Pearson Edexcel subjects, CambriLearn is an accredited examination centre. Students register through CambriLearn's established exam processes.

For Cambridge* subjects, students register at an independently registered examination centre near their location. CambriLearn's team provides guidance on locating and registering with your nearest centre. Centres typically open registration four to five months before the exam session.

Exam sessions run at set points during the year. The main sessions are May/June and October/November. Pearson Edexcel also offers a January session for some subjects. Results are released by the exam board, and certificates are issued directly to the student.

Two scheduling notes: the Afrikaans exam for the British International curriculum is only available in the October/November session. International GCSE Computer Science through Pearson Edexcel is only available in May/June.

Common questions about International GCSEs

What is an International GCSE (IGCSE)?
An International GCSE is a globally recognised academic qualification for students typically aged 14 to 16. It is based on the British GCSE but designed for an international student body. The qualification is offered by two major UK exam boards: Cambridge Assessment International Education and Pearson Edexcel. Over a million students worldwide sit International GCSE exams each year, and the results are accepted by universities in the UK, South Africa, the US, and beyond.
What grade level is the International GCSE?
International GCSEs correspond to Year 10 and Year 11 in the British system, equivalent to Grade 9 and Grade 10 in the South African system, or 10th grade in the American system. Students typically begin the programme at age 14 and sit their exams at age 16, before progressing to AS and A Levels.
How many subjects should my child take?
Most students take eight or nine International GCSE subjects. Core subjects typically include English Language, Mathematics, and at least one Science (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics). Beyond the core, students choose from humanities, additional languages, business subjects, and creative or technical options. The broad foundation keeps options open before specialising at A Level.
Do South African universities accept International GCSEs?
Yes. All major South African universities accept International GCSEs and A Levels for admission, including the University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University, the University of the Witwatersrand, and the University of Pretoria. The combination of International GCSEs followed by A Levels is considered equivalent to the NSC (National Senior Certificate) for university entry.
What is the difference between International GCSE and GCSE?
The GCSE is the UK domestic qualification, and the International GCSE is its international counterpart. Content in the International GCSE is set in a global context rather than a UK-specific one. Assessment methods accommodate students studying in different countries. For university admissions, both qualifications carry equal recognition. UK universities treat the International GCSE as equivalent to the domestic GCSE.
Can my child study International GCSEs from outside South Africa?
Yes. CambriLearn students study from over 100 countries. The curriculum, teaching, and support are delivered online through live lessons. The only in-person requirement is the exam itself, which is sat at an examination centre in or near your location. Cambridge exam centres operate in most countries worldwide, and Pearson Edexcel centres are available in all major regions.
What is the difference between Pearson Edexcel and Cambridge International GCSEs?
Both are respected UK exam boards offering internationally recognised qualifications. The key practical difference is how science subjects are assessed. Pearson Edexcel assesses practical understanding through written exams, so students do not need laboratory access. Cambridge requires a separate practical assessment component, meaning students need lab access. CambriLearn is an accredited Pearson Edexcel centre; for Cambridge, students write at independently registered exam centres as private candidates. Universities accept both equally.
What comes after International GCSEs?
After International GCSEs, students progress to AS Levels (one year) and then A Levels (a second year). Students narrow their focus to three or four subjects aligned with their intended university course. The A Level qualification is the gold standard for UK university admission and is accepted by universities worldwide. CambriLearn offers AS and A Levels through the same structured, teacher-led programme.
Is CambriLearn a Cambridge school?
CambriLearn is not a registered Cambridge school. CambriLearn delivers the International British Curriculum, which prepares students to write examinations set by Cambridge Assessment International Education and Pearson Edexcel. Students sit Cambridge exams as private candidates at independently registered examination centres. CambriLearn is accredited by Cognia and is a Pearson Edexcel accredited centre.
