International GCSEs (commonly referred to as IGCSEs by parents and schools) are internationally recognised qualifications designed for students aged 14 to 16. They sit within the British education system as the standard qualification before A Levels, equivalent to Year 10 and Year 11 in the UK, or Grades 9 and 10 in South Africa.
Two major UK exam boards administer International GCSEs globally: Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) and Pearson Edexcel. Both are regulated by Ofqual in the UK and accepted by universities worldwide. Over 10,000 schools across 160 countries offer these qualifications, and more than a million students sit International GCSE exams each year.
The qualification covers a broad range of over 70 subjects. Students typically take eight or nine International GCSEs, building a foundation across languages, sciences, mathematics, humanities, and elective subjects before narrowing their focus at A Level.
Grading follows the A* to G scale (with A* being the highest) under Cambridge, while Pearson Edexcel uses the 9 to 1 numerical scale. Both grading systems carry equal weight for university admissions.
International GCSEs differ from UK GCSEs in one key way: the curriculum is set in a global context rather than a UK-specific one. Geography papers use maps from countries beyond Britain. Literature syllabuses draw on texts from multiple traditions. This international framing makes the qualification a stronger fit for students studying outside the UK or preparing for university in multiple countries.
Universities across the UK, South Africa, the United States, Canada, Australia, and Europe accept International GCSEs as entry requirements. In the UK, they are considered equivalent to domestic GCSEs for admissions purposes. In South Africa, both Cambridge and Edexcel International GCSEs are accepted by all major universities.
CambriLearn delivers International GCSEs through structured, teacher-led online courses with live lessons, regular assessments, and dedicated academic support.
Every subject is taught by a qualified teacher through scheduled live lessons. Students follow a structured weekly timetable with real-time instruction.
Choose between Pearson Edexcel (CambriLearn is an accredited centre) and Cambridge* (students write as private candidates at independent exam centres).
The International GCSE programme runs across two academic years. Students build a broad subject base before progressing to AS and A Level study.
Live lessons run in small groups so teachers know each student by name. Academic support staff are available outside lessons for additional help.
Regular assignments marked by teachers with detailed feedback. Progress reports track how your child is performing and where they need additional support.
CambriLearn students study across more than 100 countries. Whether you are in South Africa, the UAE, the UK, or elsewhere, the programme and support are identical.
Students typically take eight or nine International GCSEs across a broad range of subject groups. Core subjects include English, Mathematics, and at least one Science.
Subject availability varies by exam board and academic year. Speak with an enrolment advisor to confirm subjects for your child.
CambriLearn students can pursue International GCSEs through two exam boards. Each has distinct advantages depending on your child's circumstances.
CambriLearn is an accredited Pearson Edexcel examination centre. Students register and prepare for exams directly through CambriLearn.
The biggest practical advantage: Edexcel International GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics assess practical understanding through written examination papers. Students do not need physical access to a laboratory. This matters for families studying from home or locations where lab access is limited.
Edexcel International GCSEs use the 9 to 1 grading scale, aligned with the current UK GCSE system. All qualifications are Ofqual-regulated and accepted by UCAS. Every Russell Group university accepts them.
70+ subjects including 30 languages. Broader subject range than Edexcel.
Private candidates: Students write exams at independently registered examination centres worldwide.
Science practicals: Cambridge science subjects include a practical assessment component. Lab access is required.
Grading: A* to G scale. Exam sessions in May/June and October/November.

Both are respected British qualifications, but they serve different contexts.
The GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) is the domestic UK qualification taken by students in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland at the end of Year 11. It is tied to the UK national curriculum, with content often referencing UK-specific contexts, case studies, and cultural references.
The International GCSE adapts this framework for a global student body. Content is set in an international context. Assessment methods accommodate students in different countries and educational settings. Some subjects offer Core and Extended tiers to serve a wider range of ability levels.
For university admissions, both qualifications carry equal weight. UK universities treat International GCSEs as equivalent to domestic GCSEs. South African universities accept both. A grade C or above in International GCSE English as a Second Language is accepted by many UK universities as proof of English proficiency.
The choice between GCSE and International GCSE comes down to where a student is studying. Students inside the UK state school system take GCSEs. Students outside the UK, or studying through international or online schools, take International GCSEs.
International GCSEs and A Levels are among the most widely accepted pre-university qualifications in the world. CambriLearn graduates have secured places at universities across the United Kingdom (Russell Group including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, Edinburgh), South Africa (all major universities), the United States, Australia, Canada, and across Europe.
For students in South Africa, British qualifications convert to university admission points through a well-documented process. South African admissions offices are familiar with International GCSEs and A Levels, and CambriLearn's academic team supports families through the conversion and application process.
International GCSE exams are external examinations set and marked by the relevant exam board (Pearson Edexcel or Cambridge Assessment International Education). CambriLearn teaches the curriculum and prepares students; the exams are administered independently.
For Pearson Edexcel subjects, CambriLearn is an accredited examination centre. Students register through CambriLearn's established exam processes.
For Cambridge* subjects, students register at an independently registered examination centre near their location. CambriLearn's team provides guidance on locating and registering with your nearest centre. Centres typically open registration four to five months before the exam session.
Exam sessions run at set points during the year. The main sessions are May/June and October/November. Pearson Edexcel also offers a January session for some subjects. Results are released by the exam board, and certificates are issued directly to the student.
Two scheduling notes: the Afrikaans exam for the British International curriculum is only available in the October/November session. International GCSE Computer Science through Pearson Edexcel is only available in May/June.
