Why families choose online high school

The traditional system wasn't built for every teenager.
Yours deserves better.

Overcrowded classrooms, exam-factory pressure, and a one-size-fits-all approach during the most critical academic years. A growing number of South African families are choosing a different path.

University-ready qualifications

Every curriculum leads to qualifications recognised by universities worldwide. Matric via SACAI. International GCSE and A Levels via Cambridge or Edexcel. US diplomas with NCAA approval. 98% of CambriLearn graduates gain university acceptance because the qualifications are trusted, not questioned.

Six recognised curricula

Choose the qualification that fits your teenager's goals: CAPS or KABV for matric via SACAI, IEB for the Independent Examinations Board pathway, the International British Curriculum* or Pearson Edexcel for International GCSE and A Levels, or US K-12 for an American pathway.

Specialist subject teachers

Every subject is taught by a qualified specialist in that discipline, not a single teacher covering everything. Live timetabled lessons for interaction and exam preparation, plus on-demand content students can revisit before assessments. The structured support high school students actually need.

Built for ambitious teens

Athletes training for national selection. Students managing health conditions. Teenagers who simply learn better outside the rigid school day. High school students study on a structured schedule that works around their lives. No 6am wake-ups. No wasted commute hours.

A safer learning environment

Peer pressure, bullying, and anxiety escalate during the high school years. Online high school removes the social toxicity while preserving genuine connection. Students focus on academics and personal growth, not survival. Mental health is part of the design, not an afterthought.

Real friendships, built in

CambriCommunity connects your teenager with peers who share their interests. Subject study groups, social clubs, mentorship programmes, and real-world meetups, building meaningful relationships beyond the classroom.

Online High School in South Africa

What is online high school?

Online high school is an accredited educational programme for students aged 13 to 18 (Grade 8 through Grade 12) delivered through a structured online learning environment instead of a physical classroom. Students follow the same nationally and internationally recognised curricula as traditional high schools, including CAPS, KABV, IEB, the International British Curriculum, Pearson Edexcel, and US K-12, with qualified specialist teachers, live timetabled lessons, structured assessments, and exam preparation. CambriLearn has delivered accredited online high school education to families worldwide for 20 years, supporting more than 80,000 students across 100+ countries with a 98% university acceptance rate.

Online high school is no longer an experimental alternative. It is a structured, accredited educational pathway thousands of South African families choose every year, particularly during the Senior Phase (Grade 8-9) and FET Phase (Grade 10-12), where subject choice, exam preparation, and university readiness determine a young person's future. CambriLearn offers six internationally recognised high school curricula: the South African CAPS curriculum (Grade 8 through Grade 12 Matric), the KABV curriculum (Grade 8 through Grade 11, Afrikaans medium), the IEB curriculum, the International British Curriculum* (International GCSE and AS/A Levels), Pearson Edexcel (International GCSE and A Level), and the US K-12 curriculum (Grade 6 through Grade 12). All programmes are Cognia-accredited and delivered by qualified specialist subject teachers.

A system that doesn't fit every teenager

High school is where the stakes become real. Subject choices in Grade 9 shape what is possible in Grade 10 to 12, and those choices determine university entrance, career pathways, and long-term earning potential. Yet the traditional South African classroom (typically 35 to 45 learners, rigid timetables, and teachers stretched across too many students) leaves many teenagers without the individual guidance they need at the most critical time. Students who need more time to master mathematics or physical science fall behind and lose confidence. Gifted students who grasp concepts quickly disengage from a system that cannot challenge them. Students with ADHD, anxiety, depression, or chronic health conditions find that schools cannot accommodate them within the constraints of a 40-child classroom. Online high school gives these families an alternative that doesn't require compromising on academic quality or their teenager's mental health.

Mental health, peer pressure, and school safety

Mental health challenges among South African teenagers are rising sharply. Depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and the relentless pressure of competitive academic environments are affecting students across the socioeconomic spectrum. CambriLearn provides a structured, supportive learning environment where your teenager can focus on academic excellence and personal growth without the social toxicity, bullying, and peer pressure that characterise many traditional high schools. Students stay connected to peers through CambriCommunity, on their own terms and in healthier ways.

A structured day for ambitious teenagers

Today's teenagers lead more complex lives than any previous generation. Whether your child is training for provincial or national sports selection, managing a chronic illness, pursuing professional performing arts, travelling internationally, or simply learning more effectively outside the 7am to 3pm school day, online high school provides structure traditional timetables cannot match. High school students follow a structured weekly programme built around their academic needs, with the freedom to organise their study hours around training, appointments, or the times of day when they focus best.

Curriculum choice and university pathways

One of CambriLearn's defining advantages for high school students is curriculum and qualification choice. South African families can follow CAPS from Grade 8 through to Grade 12 and the National Senior Certificate (matric) via SACAI, or choose KABV for Afrikaans-medium instruction. Families wanting an alternative South African pathway can choose the IEB, with its 98.47% pass rate and 89.37% bachelor passes nationally. Those seeking globally portable qualifications can choose the International British Curriculum* (International GCSE and A Levels) or Pearson Edexcel (International GCSE and A Level). American families or those targeting US universities can choose the US K-12 curriculum, which is NCAA approved for athletic scholarships. Whichever you choose, 98% of CambriLearn graduates gain university acceptance.

How It Works

How online high school works

Online high school follows the same academic standards and qualification pathways as traditional schools. The difference is in the delivery. Instead of sitting in a physical classroom, your teenager accesses lessons, assignments, and teacher support through a structured online learning environment. This is not "just watching videos." It is a complete high school experience designed around your child's needs rather than a rigid institutional timetable.

At CambriLearn, every student follows a structured weekly learning programme created by qualified subject-specialist teachers. This includes live timetabled lessons for direct interaction, recorded lesson libraries for revision and structured pacing, regular assignments with detailed teacher feedback, and dedicated tutor support for one-on-one guidance. High school students typically spend 4 to 6 focused hours per day on their studies. Less time than a traditional school day, but more productive.

The FET phase (Grade 10 to 12) is where it matters most. CAPS and KABV students write their matric examinations through SACAI. IEB students sit through the Independent Examinations Board. International curriculum students sit for International GCSE, AS and A Level examinations or Pearson Edexcel International GCSE and A Level examinations at independently registered centres as private candidates. Every qualification is nationally and internationally recognised, and accepted by universities worldwide.

Curriculum Pathways

Matric Pathways

Matric online: completion, rewrite, and second-chance options

CambriLearn supports three distinct matric pathways online: students completing matric in the standard Grade 10 to 12 sequence, students who want to upgrade their existing matric symbols to qualify for university or a specific course, and students who didn't pass matric the first time and want a second chance. All three pathways lead to the same National Senior Certificate (NSC) recognised by every South African university.

Doing matric online for the first time

Standard Grade 10 to 12 matric completion through CambriLearn covers the full FET phase under the CAPS curriculum via SACAI or the IEB curriculum via the Independent Examinations Board. Students follow a structured weekly programme with live timetabled lessons, regular assessments, and dedicated exam preparation. The final NSC certificate is identical to one issued to a learner at any government or private school. CambriLearn graduates achieve a 98% university acceptance rate.

Matric upgrade: improving your existing symbols

If you already have an NSC but didn't achieve the symbols you need for university entrance or a specific qualification, the matric upgrade pathway lets you rewrite individual subjects to improve your marks. CambriLearn supports matric upgrade students on the CAPS curriculum, with focused subject teaching, past-paper preparation, and one-on-one consultant guidance. You only re-enrol in the subjects you need to upgrade, and you write at an accredited SACAI examination centre. Common upgrade subjects: Mathematics, Physical Science, Life Sciences, and English.

Matric rewrite and second-chance matric

Students who didn't pass matric, or who left school before completing Grade 12, have an open door at CambriLearn. The rewrite and second-chance pathways are open to learners of any age. Adult learners returning to complete matric, students who failed certain subjects, and learners who left school for personal reasons are all welcome. There is no upper age limit. Students enrol on the CAPS curriculum, complete the required subjects, and sit the NSC examinations through SACAI. Many CambriLearn rewrite students complete matric in 12 to 18 months while working or managing other commitments.

Subjects, structure, and what to expect

For both upgrade and rewrite pathways, CambriLearn provides a focused programme on the specific subjects you need. The minimum NSC requirements are seven subjects: two official languages, Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, Life Orientation, and three additional subjects. Students who need to write fewer subjects (upgrade pathway) can enrol per subject. Examination registration with SACAI happens through CambriLearn, and the final qualification is the same NSC issued by Umalusi. Speak with a consultant to confirm which subjects you need and which pathway suits your situation.

Affordable Online High School

How much does online high school cost?

One of the first questions South African parents ask is whether online high school is affordable. The short answer: it is often significantly cheaper than private schooling, and comparable to or less than many traditional school expenses when you factor in the true total cost of education at the high school level.

Private high school fees in South Africa range from R60,000 to over R180,000 per year, before you add transport, uniforms, textbooks, sport fees, school trips, and the hidden cost of time lost to commuting. Even government schools carry hidden costs that add up: transport alone can exceed R18,000 per year, and many families spend R5,000 to R10,000 annually on uniforms, textbooks, and stationery. CambriLearn eliminates most of these secondary costs entirely.

CambriLearn offers structured package tiers to accommodate different budgets and learning styles. For Grade 8 to 9, families can choose between Starter (on-demand recorded lessons and assessments), Standard (adds live timetabled lessons, marking, reports, and academic support), or Premium (adds direct teacher chat, live Q&A sessions, and mock exam preparation). From Grade 10 onwards, the structure shifts to Standard and Premium only, reflecting the increased academic demands of the FET phase.

Estimates are indicative and vary by school and region. CambriLearn fees vary by grade, curriculum, and package. Visit our pricing page for current fees. Grade 12 external examination fees (matric, International GCSE, A Level) are charged separately by the relevant examination body.

When you factor in transport, uniforms, textbooks, and extramurals, many families find that CambriLearn costs a fraction of private high school fees, with personalised pacing, dedicated teacher support, and six curriculum pathways included. Visit our pricing page to compare.

Cognia Accredited

CambriLearn is internationally accredited by Cognia, which covers 36,000+ institutions across 85 countries. Cognia's quality assurance applies to all CambriLearn programmes from Grade 8 through to matric, A Levels, and the US diploma. The same accreditation standard used by leading schools worldwide.

SACAI Registered (CAPS & KABV)

CambriLearn is registered with SACAI for the CAPS and KABV matric pathways. SACAI is a private assessment body accredited by Umalusi, South Africa's quality assurance council. Students write the same National Senior Certificate examinations as learners at any government or private school. The matric certificate is identical.

IEB Pathway

CambriLearn offers the IEB pathway, registered with the Independent Examinations Board. The IEB is widely regarded as the gold standard for independent examination in South Africa, with national 2024 results showing a 98.47% pass rate and 89.37% bachelor passes (IEB). Students sit IEB matric examinations through the Independent Examinations Board.

International British* & Pearson Edexcel

CambriLearn delivers the International British Curriculum* and Pearson Edexcel pathways. Students prepare to write International GCSE, AS, and A Level examinations (Cambridge*) and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE and A Level examinations at independently registered examination centres as private candidates. Both pathways are recognised by universities in 100+ countries, including Russell Group institutions.

NCAA Approved

CambriLearn is NCAA approved, meaning students on the US Curriculum pathway can qualify for athletic scholarships at American colleges and universities. For student athletes with ambitions to compete at the collegiate level in the United States, this approval is essential, and CambriLearn is one of the few online schools to hold it.

Accreditation

Is online high school in South Africa accredited?

Accreditation is the single most important factor when choosing an online high school in South Africa. Without proper accreditation, your child's matric or A Level qualifications may not be recognised by universities or employers, rendering years of study meaningless. CambriLearn is fully accredited by multiple national and international bodies, ensuring every qualification earned through our online high school holds the same weight as those earned at traditional schools.

Cognia accreditation provides institutional quality assurance across all of CambriLearn's programmes. Cognia is a global accreditation body covering more than 36,000 institutions across 85 countries, ensuring CambriLearn meets rigorous international standards for educational quality, governance, and continuous improvement. This accreditation covers every curriculum pathway from Grade 8 through to matric, A Levels, and the US diploma.

For South African families on the CAPS or KABV curriculum, CambriLearn is registered with SACAI. SACAI (the South African Comprehensive Assessment Institute) is a private assessment body accredited by Umalusi, South Africa's quality assurance council for general and further education. This means your child writes the same National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations as learners at government and private schools. The qualification is identical. SACAI matric certificates are fully recognised by every South African university, including UCT, Wits, Stellenbosch, University of Pretoria, and UJ. The KABV pathway delivers the national curriculum in Afrikaans through SACAI, leading to the same NSC qualification.

Families choosing the IEB pathway are registered with the Independent Examinations Board, widely regarded as the gold standard for independent examination in South Africa. IEB's 2024 results showed a 98.47% pass rate and 89.37% bachelor passes nationally (IEB), reflecting both the calibre of students and the examination's academic demands. IEB matric certificates are accepted at all South African universities and are particularly valued for the critical thinking and analytical skills they develop. Internationally, the IEB NSC is considered comparable to UK GCE Advanced Subsidiary (AS) level.

International curriculum students on the International British Curriculum* pathway are prepared to write International GCSE, AS, and A Level examinations administered by Cambridge* at independently registered examination centres as private candidates. Students on the Pearson Edexcel pathway write Pearson Edexcel International GCSE and A Level examinations, also at independent centres. Both examination bodies are recognised in over 100 countries, giving your child genuine global portability for university admission.

The US K-12 curriculum follows an American educational framework delivered through Score Academy Online. CambriLearn is also NCAA approved, meaning student athletes on the US curriculum pathway can qualify for athletic scholarships at American colleges and universities, a critical distinction for young athletes with ambitions to compete at the collegiate level.

Parents sometimes ask whether online high school is "real school." The answer is unequivocal: CambriLearn delivers the same curriculum content, the same academic standards, and the same final examinations as traditional high schools. The qualification your child earns is identical. The difference is the delivery method. 20 years of operating experience, 80,000+ students educated, and a 98% university acceptance rate confirm that online high school works.

"Our son was failing at a prestigious private school, not because he wasn't capable, but because the environment crushed him. Within six months on CambriLearn's CAPS programme he was getting distinctions. He's now in Grade 12 and has already been conditionally accepted to UCT. Best decision we ever made."

"We relocated from Johannesburg to Dubai mid-year. Our daughter switched from CAPS to the International British Curriculum on CambriLearn without missing a single week of school. She wrote her International GCSEs last year and scored A*s in four subjects. The international portability is real."

"My son is a competitive swimmer training for national colours. Traditional school was impossible. He missed too many classes and teachers wouldn't accommodate his schedule. CambriLearn lets him train in the mornings and study in the afternoons. He's excelling academically and in the pool."

Who Is It For

Who is online high school in South Africa for?

Online high school is for any South African family that wants accredited education without the constraints of traditional schooling. These are the most common profiles across CambriLearn's community of 80,000+ students educated over 20 years.

Student athletes and performers

Competitive swimmers, tennis players, rugby prospects, dancers, and musicians need schedules traditional schools cannot offer. CambriLearn allows students to train during the day and study around their competition calendars. Our NCAA approval also opens the door to US college sports scholarships, a pathway unavailable through most South African schools.

Families planning emigration

South African families relocating to the UK, UAE, Australia, or Europe face the disruption of changing education systems mid-year. CambriLearn's international curricula, including the International British Curriculum* and Pearson Edexcel, are recognised in over 100 countries, ensuring a seamless academic transition with no lost years.

Teenagers with special needs or health challenges

Teenagers with anxiety, ADHD, autism spectrum conditions, chronic illness, or physical disabilities often struggle in the rigid environment of traditional high schools, particularly during the high-pressure matric years. CambriLearn's mastery-based learning model, combined with dedicated tutor support on Premium packages, allows these students to learn in an environment that accommodates their needs without compromising on academic outcomes or university entrance qualifications.

Parents concerned about school safety

School violence, bullying, drug exposure, and inadequate security are persistent concerns across South African high schools. Online schooling removes these physical risks entirely while providing structured social opportunities through CambriCommunity: clubs, study groups, and community events designed for teenagers.

Rural and remote families

Families in rural areas or small towns often face limited high school options, particularly for specialised subjects needed for university entrance. CambriLearn delivers accredited education with qualified subject-specialist teachers to any location with an internet connection. Six curriculum pathways, including CAPS, KABV, IEB, the International British Curriculum*, Pearson Edexcel, and US K-12.

Matric repeaters and second-chance learners

Students who didn't achieve the matric results they needed, or who left school before completing Grade 12, can re-enrol with CambriLearn and complete their NSC at their own structured pace. CambriLearn's open-door admissions policy means every student gets a second chance, regardless of past academic history. Adult learners returning to complete matric, and learners who failed certain subjects, are equally welcome. There is no upper age limit.

Common questions from parents

Yes. CambriLearn is registered with SACAI and offers an IEB pathway. Grade 10 to 12 learners on the CAPS and KABV curricula write their NSC examinations at independently accredited examination centres across South Africa. Do universities accept qualifications from online schools?
Every South African university, including UCT, Wits, Stellenbosch, UP, and UJ, accepts qualifications earned through CambriLearn. CambriLearn graduates achieve a 98% university acceptance rate. CambriLearn launched CambriCommunity, an online environment where students connect through live group activities, virtual clubs, study groups, and community events. Students also interact with teachers and peers during live timetabled lessons. Many CambriLearn families also participate in local sports, arts, and extramurals alongside their online studies.
How does online school handle load shedding?
CambriLearn's school is built for South African realities. All lessons are available as recorded videos that can be downloaded in advance, assignments can be completed offline and uploaded when connectivity returns, and the structured pacing model means students can shift their schedule around load shedding windows.
