How Examinations Work at CambriLearn

Every CambriLearn curriculum leads to externally examined qualifications issued by recognised examination boards. The examination process differs by curriculum. This page explains exactly what happens, what CambriLearn handles, and what families need to arrange.

Overview

What CambriLearn Handles

The level of examination support CambriLearn provides depends on the curriculum pathway. Here is what is managed for each.

Pearson Edexcel

CambriLearn is an accredited Pearson Edexcel centre. Exam registration and coordination are handled institutionally. No laboratory practical examinations are required at any level. Results and certificates are issued directly by Pearson Edexcel.

Accredited Centre

CAPS, KABV & IEB

CambriLearn facilitates registration with SACAI or IEB for all FET Phase students. Grades 10 and 11 examinations are written at home using online proctoring. Grade 12 final examinations are at external centres assigned by the examining body. CambriLearn manages the registration process.

Registration Facilitated

International British

Students register independently at approved examination centres as private candidates. CambriLearn's Exam Officers assist with centre identification, zone confirmation, and examination codes. Certificates are issued by the examination board via the registered centre.

Guided Registration
Pearson Edexcel

Examinations for Pearson Edexcel Students

CambriLearn is a Pearson Edexcel-accredited centre. This means examination registration and coordination are handled institutionally for enrolled students. Your child is not a private candidate navigating the process alone.

No Practical Examinations

Pearson Edexcel does not require laboratory practical examinations at any level, including for International GCSE and A Level Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. All assessment is through written examinations. This is a significant advantage for online learners, removing a common barrier that exists with other British examination boards where science practicals must be completed at a separate facility.

Examination Sessions

Pearson Edexcel International examinations run twice per year. Students can enter for either session depending on readiness, and can split subjects across sessions to manage workload.

Session 1
January
Available for most International GCSE and A Level subjects
Session 2
May / June
Full subject availability including International GCSE Computer Science (June only)

The dual annual sessions contrast with South African matric examinations, which happen once per year in October/November. Edexcel's additional session provides options if a student needs more preparation time or wants to complete qualifications earlier. Students who are not satisfied with a result can re-sit in the next available session without waiting a full year.

Examination Fees

Examination entry fees are separate from CambriLearn course fees and are charged per subject. Each subject typically involves multiple papers. CambriLearn communicates fee schedules and deadlines in advance of each session so families can plan accordingly.

Results and Certification

Results are released by Pearson Edexcel according to their global schedule, several weeks after each examination session. Statements of results are available online on results day. Certificates are issued directly by Pearson Edexcel, confirming the qualification regardless of where or how the student studied.

Why Edexcel for online learners? The combination of no practical requirement, twice-yearly sessions, and CambriLearn's accredited centre status makes Pearson Edexcel the most streamlined British qualification pathway for online students. Many families combine International British humanities subjects with Edexcel sciences for the strongest university application. Learn more about Pearson Edexcel

International British Curriculum

Examinations for International British Students

International GCSE, AS Level, and A Level examinations are written at independently registered examination centres. CambriLearn's Exam Officers guide families through centre selection and registration. You are supported through the process, not left to navigate it alone.

How Registration Works

Students register as private candidates at an approved examination centre. CambriLearn is not an examination centre for these qualifications, so registration is made directly with the chosen centre. CambriLearn's curriculum-specific Exam Officers are available to help families identify a suitable centre, confirm examination zones, components, and subject codes before registration.

To reach the Exam Officers team, email hello@cambrilearn.com. A directory of examination centres is maintained at cambrilearn.com/info/exam-centres.

When to Register

Examination centres announce when they open for registrations. A good time to begin reaching out is four to five months before the examination window. For November examinations, contact centres in June. For May examinations, contact centres in January. It is always recommended to enquire early, as centres will confirm when registrations are open.

Identify a suitable centre
Use the CambriLearn exam centres directory or contact the Exam Officers team for guidance on centres in your area.
Confirm subject codes and components
CambriLearn's Exam Officers can verify the correct codes, zones, and paper components for each subject your child is entering.
Register with the centre
Contact the centre directly to complete registration. Centres handle timetables, fees, and logistical arrangements for examination day.
Collect results and certificates
Statements of results are available online on results day via the centre's login details. Certificates are issued by the examination board and collected through the centre.

Examination Sessions

Session 1
May / June
Full subject availability. Register from January.
Session 2
October / November
Full subject availability. British International Afrikaans is only available in this session. Register from June.

Science Practical Examinations

At AS Level, practical examinations are compulsory for Biology, Chemistry, and Physics under the International British curriculum. Students must contact an examination centre that facilitates practical examinations well ahead of time to arrange both practice sessions and formal examination registration.

Studying sciences online? Pearson Edexcel International GCSE and A Level Biology, Chemistry, and Physics are assessed entirely through written examinations with no practical component required at any level. CambriLearn is an accredited Pearson Edexcel centre. Many students combine International British humanities subjects with Edexcel sciences. Learn more about Pearson Edexcel

Examination Fees

External examination fees are charged per subject by the examination centre and are not included in CambriLearn course fees. Each subject involves multiple papers, and fees vary between centres and regions. Centres communicate their fee schedules during the registration process.

Concessions and Accommodations

Students requiring concessions or accommodations (such as extra time, a separate venue, or a reader/scribe) must apply through the examination centre or the British Council directly. Applications should be submitted well in advance of the examination session, as late requests are typically declined. It is the guardian's responsibility to confirm that the chosen centre can provide the required accommodations.

Early Years to Foundation Phase

For students in Early Years through Foundation II on the British International curriculum, all tests and examinations are written at home under invigilation by an adult, following CambriLearn's prescribed guidelines. No external examination centre is required at these levels.

CAPS & KABV

Examinations for CAPS and KABV Students

CambriLearn facilitates examination registration for all FET Phase (Grade 10 to 12) CAPS and KABV students through SACAI. The examination process changes at each phase, with CambriLearn managing the administrative requirements at every stage.

Examinations by Phase

The examination format depends on the student's grade level. CambriLearn has structured the process so that external examination centres are only required at Grade 12, when final National Senior Certificate examinations are written.

At Home
Grade R to Grade 9
All tests and examinations are written at home under invigilation by an adult, following CambriLearn's prescribed guidelines. No external centre is required. No additional examination fees apply.
Online Proctoring
Grade 10 and 11
All tests and examinations are written at home using CambriLearn's online proctoring system (SMOWL). A device with a webcam is required. No additional examination fees apply. This is a requirement of the examining bodies.
External Centre
Grade 12 Finals
Final Grade 12 examinations must be written at an approved external examination centre within South Africa. CambriLearn facilitates registration. The examining body assigns a centre based on the student's location.

FET Phase Registration (Grade 10 to 12)

CambriLearn facilitates registration with SACAI for all FET Phase students. A full student report card confirming a passed prior grade is required for registration at Grade 10, 11, and 12, along with the relevant identification documents. Cut-off dates for registration apply, and guardians are responsible for providing all required documentation to CambriLearn in advance of these deadlines.

Grade 12 Final Examinations

CambriLearn facilitates registration for all CAPS Grade 12 final examinations. Registration and examination fees are payable upfront when enrolling for Grade 12, separate from course fees and charged per subject.

The examining body assigns the student to an examination centre based on their location. Guardians are given a choice of three centre options and the examining body makes the final assignment. CambriLearn does not influence centre assignments. Grade 12 final examinations cannot be facilitated outside of South Africa.

Grade 12 mid-year examinations and preliminary examinations are written at home using CambriLearn's proctoring system. Only the final examinations in October/November require attendance at an external centre.

Results and Certification

Successful candidates receive the National Senior Certificate (NSC), issued by Umalusi. CambriLearn provides the hardcopy certificates by courier to a South African address. For Grades 1 to 11, CambriLearn issues report cards per term as a registered institution.

Concessions and Accommodations

Students requiring concessions or accommodations should notify the Academic Support team at the beginning of the academic year. It is advised that concessions are in place from Grade 10. When registering for Grade 12 final examinations, guardians must mention any required concessions or accommodations, and confirm that the assigned centre can provide them.

IEB

Examinations for IEB Students

CambriLearn facilitates IEB registration for FET Phase students. The IEB examination process follows the same phased structure as CAPS, with online proctoring for Grades 10 and 11, and external centres for Grade 12 finals. The IEB is known for its rigorous academic standards and emphasis on critical thinking.

The IEB examination structure mirrors the CAPS pathway described above. CambriLearn facilitates registration with the IEB. Grade 10 and 11 examinations are written at home using the proctoring system. Grade 12 final examinations are written at external centres within South Africa, assigned by the IEB based on the student's location.

IEB registration and examination fees are payable upfront at enrolment, separate from course fees. All documentation and fee deadlines apply in the same way as CAPS. Successful candidates receive the National Senior Certificate (NSC) issued by Umalusi, the same qualification as CAPS students, with the IEB endorsement.

IEB availability: CambriLearn's IEB curriculum is currently available for Grade 10. IEB Grade 12 examinations will be available from 2028. Learn more about IEB at CambriLearn

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Does CambriLearn register my child for examinations?
It depends on the curriculum. For CAPS and IEB (FET Phase), CambriLearn facilitates registration with SACAI and IEB respectively, including Grade 12 final examinations. For Pearson Edexcel, CambriLearn handles registration as an accredited examination centre. For the International British curriculum (Cambridge), students register independently at approved centres as private candidates. CambriLearn's Exam Officers assist with centre identification and code confirmation.
Are examination fees included in CambriLearn's course fees?
Examination fees are separate from course fees for all curricula where external examinations apply. For CAPS and IEB Grade 12, registration and examination fees are payable upfront at enrolment, charged per subject. For British and Edexcel qualifications, examination fees are charged per subject by the examination centre or through CambriLearn. There are no additional examination fees for CAPS Grades 10 and 11 (proctored online examinations).
Can my child sit examinations outside South Africa?
For Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel qualifications, yes. Approved examination centres exist internationally, including through the British Council network and registered schools. For CAPS and IEB Grade 12 final examinations, these must be written at approved centres within South Africa. Grade 10 and 11 CAPS examinations are completed online via proctoring, so location does not matter for those. Find exam centres
What is the difference between Cambridge and Edexcel examination arrangements?
CambriLearn is a Pearson Edexcel-accredited centre, meaning examination coordination is handled institutionally and no laboratory practicals are required. For Cambridge qualifications, students register at independently approved centres as private candidates. Cambridge AS Level Biology, Chemistry, and Physics require practical examinations at a centre that facilitates them. Edexcel does not require practicals at any level.
How do Grades 10 and 11 CAPS examinations work online?
All Grade 10 and 11 tests and examinations for CAPS and KABV are completed at home using CambriLearn's online proctoring system. Students require a device with a webcam and are recorded through the SMOWL application during the assessment. This is a requirement of the examining bodies and ensures examination integrity without requiring travel to an external centre.
Who issues the final certificate?
Certificates are always issued by the examination body, not by CambriLearn. For CAPS and IEB, successful Grade 12 candidates receive the National Senior Certificate (NSC) issued by Umalusi. For Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel, statements of results and certificates are issued directly by the relevant examination board. For the US K-12 curriculum, credentials are issued by Score Academy Online as a Cognia-accredited institution.
What if my child needs extra time or accommodations?
For CAPS and IEB, notify CambriLearn's Academic Support team at the beginning of the academic year. It is advised that concessions are in place from Grade 10. For Cambridge and Edexcel, accommodation applications must be submitted through the examination centre or the British Council well in advance of the session. The guardian is responsible for confirming that the chosen centre can provide the required accommodations.
Can my child re-sit examinations if they are not satisfied with their results?
For Pearson Edexcel, students can re-sit in the next available session (January or June) without waiting a full year. For Cambridge qualifications, re-sits are available in the next May/June or October/November session. For CAPS and IEB, supplementary examinations may be available through the examining body, but the primary re-sit opportunity is at the next annual examination in October/November.
