Private schooling explained

What makes a school a private school

A private school is independently funded, sets its own academic standards, employs its own teachers, and is accountable to external accreditation bodies rather than government payroll. CambriLearn meets every one of these criteria. The only difference is the classroom is online.

Independently accredited

CambriLearn is accredited by Cognia (international), an approved Pearson Edexcel centre, and registered with both SACAI and the IEB. These are the same accreditation standards that govern traditional private schools. Umalusi quality-assures the National Senior Certificate. CambriLearn is also NCAA approved for student athletes applying to US universities.

Specialist teachers, not content libraries

Every subject is taught by a specialist teacher through scheduled live lessons. Students ask questions in real time, receive written feedback on assessments, and are held to deadlines. This is the teaching model of a private school, delivered through a screen instead of a physical classroom.

University-track outcomes

CambriLearn graduates hold offers from Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Stanford, UCT, and Stellenbosch. A 98% university acceptance rate across 20 years of operation. These are the outcomes of a private school that takes academic preparation seriously, not a correspondence programme.

The teaching model

How an online private school works

The same structure as a traditional private school: timetabled lessons, qualified teachers, marked assessments, and academic accountability. The difference is where the classroom is. See how CambriLearn works for full details.

Scheduled live lessons

Timetabled classes with specialist teachers for every subject. Students attend, participate, and ask questions in real time. Lessons are recorded for replay when needed.

Structured term plans

Each term has a clear schedule: topics per week, assessment due dates, and examination dates. The timetable is provided. Parents and students do not build it themselves. View timetables.

Teacher-marked assessments

Assignments and tests are marked by registered teachers with written feedback. Not auto-graded. Students receive rubrics, model answers, and specific commentary on how to improve.

Progress tracking for parents

A parent dashboard shows attendance, marks, assessment progress, and upcoming deadlines. Reports can be downloaded as PDFs for record-keeping, school transfers, or sharing with tutors.

Examination preparation

Trial examinations simulate the real exam under timed conditions. Revision packs, past paper banks, and exam technique coaching are included. External exams are written at designated centres.

Academic support and pastoral care

Students have access to academic support staff, subject-specific help sessions, and a student community through CambriCommunity. Online does not mean alone.

Structured daily schedule: Live lessons are typically 4 to 5 hours per day. The remaining study time includes offline work: textbook reading, written assignments, and past paper practice. The structured timetable leaves afternoons free for sport, creative pursuits, or other activities.

Curriculum pathways

Six curricula in one private school

Most traditional private schools offer one curriculum. CambriLearn offers six, so families can choose the pathway that fits their child's goals, whether that is South African matric, international qualifications, or a US diploma.

*CambriLearn is not a registered Cambridge school. Students following the International British Curriculum write examinations administered by Cambridge Assessment International Education at independently registered examination centres as private candidates. CambriLearn is an accredited Pearson Edexcel centre.

Common questions about online private schooling

Is CambriLearn a real school or just a learning platform?
CambriLearn is a registered, accredited private school. It is accredited by Cognia (international accreditation), registered with SACAI and the IEB as examining bodies, and an approved Pearson Edexcel centre. Students receive formal qualifications (NSC, International GCSEs, A-Levels, US Diploma) that are identical to those awarded at traditional schools. Verify our accreditations.
Are private schools better than public schools?
Private schools typically offer smaller class sizes, more subject choices, and stronger accountability structures. The key difference is governance: private schools are independently funded and set their own standards, while public schools follow government resourcing and staffing. Whether a specific private school is right for your child depends on the curriculum, the teaching quality, and the outcomes it produces. Ask about pass rates, university acceptance, and accreditation status before making a decision.
How much does online private schooling cost compared to a traditional private school?
Online private schooling typically costs significantly less than a traditional campus-based private school. You also eliminate transport, uniform, and many ancillary fees. CambriLearn's pricing varies by curriculum and grade level. View current pricing or speak to a consultant about your specific situation.
Do universities accept qualifications from an online private school?
Yes. CambriLearn graduates hold offers from Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Stanford, UCT, Stellenbosch, and universities across 50+ countries. The qualifications are identical to those awarded at traditional schools because the examining bodies (SACAI, IEB, Pearson Edexcel) set and mark the same exams regardless of where the student studied. CambriLearn maintains a 98% university acceptance rate.
Can my child write matric through an online private school?
Yes. CambriLearn students write the National Senior Certificate (matric) through either SACAI or IEB, both quality-assured by Umalusi. The matric certificate is identical to one from a traditional school. Final examinations are written at designated examination centres across South Africa and internationally. See how exams work for full details.
Is online schooling the same as homeschooling?
No. Homeschooling means the parent is the primary educator and is responsible for curriculum planning, teaching, and assessment. At CambriLearn, specialist teachers deliver scheduled live lessons, mark assessments with written feedback, and follow structured term plans. The school handles curriculum delivery. Parents supervise and support, but they are not responsible for teaching. For a detailed comparison, read our online school vs homeschool guide.
What about socialisation?
CambriLearn students interact with classmates and teachers during live lessons, participate in group projects, and connect through CambriCommunity, our student community platform with daily challenges and social features. The structured timetable also frees up afternoons for sport clubs, music, art, and other in-person social activities. Many families find their children are more socially active, not less, because the schedule allows time for it.
Can my child start mid-year?
Mid-year enrolment is possible for most curricula and grade levels. The earlier in the academic year you enrol, the smoother the transition, particularly for examination years where assessment marks accumulate from the start. Speak to a consultant about timing for your specific situation.
We live outside South Africa. Can we still enrol?
Yes. CambriLearn serves families in over 100 countries. South African curricula (CAPS, IEB) and international pathways (International British, Pearson Edexcel, US K-12) are all available regardless of where you live. Examination arrangements for international students are coordinated through our admissions team. Book a consultation to discuss logistics for your country.
How do I check if a private school is properly accredited?
Ask for the school's registration numbers and verify them directly with the relevant bodies. For South African curricula, check registration with SACAI or the IEB. For international curricula, check accreditation with Cognia, Pearson Edexcel, or Cambridge Assessment International Education. Ask whether the school is quality-assured by Umalusi for NSC qualifications. CambriLearn's full accreditation details are published on our accreditation page.
