IEB explained

Same curriculum, different exam

The IEB is an examination board, not a separate curriculum. Both IEB and SACAI students follow the CAPS curriculum prescribed by the Department of Basic Education. The difference is who sets and marks the final exams — and how those exams assess understanding.

IEB and CAPS use the same content

Your child studies the same national curriculum. CAPS prescribes what is taught. The IEB prescribes how it is examined. IEB exams require students to analyse unfamiliar scenarios, construct written arguments, and apply knowledge in new contexts.

Same NSC qualification, same universities

Both IEB and SACAI lead to the National Senior Certificate, quality-assured by Umalusi. Every South African university accepts the IEB NSC — no exemptions needed. The IEB NSC is internationally benchmarked as comparable to UK AS-Level standard. For families considering international qualifications instead, see the International British Curriculum.

Structured FET phase — not self-paced

The FET phase (Grade 10–12) follows a structured academic year with set terms, scheduled assessments, and specific deadlines. This is a regulatory requirement under both IEB and SACAI. A minimum Grade 9 average of 70% is required for IEB enrolment at CambriLearn.

What's included

How the IEB works at CambriLearn

The IEB FET phase is structured. Here is what the teaching model looks like in practice — live teaching, not self-study. See how CambriLearn works for details across all curricula.

Live lessons with specialist teachers

Scheduled live classes for each subject. Students ask questions in real time. Lessons are recorded for replay if missed.

Structured term plans provided

Each term has a clear schedule: topics per week, SBA task due dates, and internal assessment dates. You don't build the timetable yourself — it's provided.

Teacher-marked assessments

SBAs are marked by registered teachers with written feedback on what was done well and where to improve. Not auto-graded — real teacher commentary.

Marking guidelines and model answers

Students receive rubrics, model answers, and memo-style feedback. Past paper practice with worked solutions is part of exam preparation.

Parent dashboard

Track attendance, marks, SBA progress, and upcoming deadlines. Reports can be downloaded as PDFs for record-keeping, transfers, or sharing with tutors. View timetables for all curricula.

Exam preparation support

Trial exams simulate the IEB final under timed conditions. Revision packs, past paper banks, and exam technique coaching for the October/November session.

Screen time balance: Live lessons are typically 4–5 hours per day. Remaining study time includes offline work: textbook reading, written assignments, and past paper practice. The structured timetable leaves afternoons free for sport or other activities.

Subject options

IEB subjects and structure

Students choose seven subjects: four compulsory and three electives. The combination determines which university programmes become accessible. For detailed guidance, see our Grade 10 subject choices guide.

Compulsory subjects (4)

  • Home Language (English or Afrikaans)
  • First Additional Language
  • Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy
  • Life Orientation

Elective subjects (choose 3)

  • Sciences: Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, CAT, IT
  • Commerce: Accounting, Business Studies, Economics
  • Humanities: Geography, History
  • Creative arts: Visual Arts, Dramatic Arts

Advanced Programme (AP) subjects: Optional AP courses in Mathematics, English, and Afrikaans provide university-level challenge. Quality-assured by Stellenbosch University and comparable to full UK A-Levels. Taken in addition to the standard seven subjects, not instead of one. Ask your consultant about AP availability →

Subject availability may vary. Not every IEB subject is available through distance learning. Practical subjects requiring specialised equipment may not be offered. View available IEB Grade 10 subjects or confirm your child's preferred subjects with a consultant before enrolling.

How IEB assessment works

IEB assessment has two components: School-Based Assessment (25%) completed throughout the year and the IEB final examination (75%) written in October/November at designated centres. For full details on how examinations work across all CambriLearn curricula, see how exams work.

SBAs include assignments, tests, practical work, oral assessments, and internal examinations — all completed through the CambriLearn platform and moderated to IEB standards. Grades 10 and 11 tests are proctored online using SMOWL. A device with a webcam is required.

Grade 12 final examinations must be written at an external IEB centre within South Africa. CambriLearn facilitates registration. The examining body assigns the student to a centre. Registration and exam fees for Grade 12 finals are separate and payable upfront.

Are Grade 10 and 11 exam fees included?

Yes. Tests and internal examinations for Grade 10 and 11 are proctored online and included in course fees. No additional exam fees at these levels.

What about trial exams?

Before finals, students write preliminary examinations that simulate the real IEB experience under timed conditions. Results help identify gaps and inform final preparation priorities.

Concessions and accommodations?

If your child needs extra time or other accommodations, notify the Academic Support team at the beginning of the year. It's advised that concessions are in place from Grade 10. CambriLearn assists with the application process.

How do I download progress reports?

Progress reports, attendance records, and SBA results are accessible through the parent dashboard. Reports can be downloaded as PDFs for record-keeping, transfer documentation, or sharing with tutors.

Due diligence

How to compare IEB providers

Eight questions that separate credible IEB online schools from those trading on the name without the substance to back it up. Verify CambriLearn's accreditations →

Is the school registered with the IEB?

Ask for the IEB registration number and verify it directly. Schools without registration cannot enter students for IEB examinations.

Are teachers IEB-experienced?

Teachers should understand IEB exam patterns, marking expectations, and how to prepare students for application-style questions — not just CAPS content delivery.

How are SBAs administered?

Ask how tests are invigilated, how assignments are marked (teacher-marked or auto-graded), and whether the school's SBA processes meet IEB moderation standards.

Are structured term plans provided?

You should receive weekly topic schedules, SBA due dates, and assessment calendars. If you're expected to build this yourself, that's a red flag.

Marking guidelines included?

Effective IEB preparation requires rubrics, model answers, and memo-style feedback. Ask whether this is included in the fee or sold as an add-on.

What exam prep support is offered?

Trial exams, past paper banks, exam technique coaching, and revision packs should be part of the programme — not charged separately.

What does the parent dashboard show?

You should be able to track attendance, marks, SBA completion, and upcoming deadlines. Ask whether reports can be downloaded for transfers.

What is the IEB track record?

Established providers should share pass rates, bachelor's pass percentages, and distinction counts. New providers without track records carry more risk.

Common questions about IEB online

Is IEB harder than CAPS?
The IEB assesses differently rather than being categorically harder. IEB exams emphasise application and reasoning in unfamiliar contexts, while CAPS exams cover broader content with more structured, predictable questions. Students who understand concepts deeply and write well tend to find IEB more natural. Students who excel at memorisation and structured preparation may perform better with CAPS. Read our full CAPS vs IEB comparison.
Can my child switch from CAPS to IEB?
Switching is possible but requires planning. Both curricula cover similar content, so the transition is about adjusting to different assessment expectations rather than learning new material. Switching in Grade 10 is manageable. By Grade 11 it becomes difficult because SBA marks have accumulated. Grade 12 switches are inadvisable. Discuss timing with a consultant.
Do online IEB students write the same exams as traditional school students?
Yes. All IEB students write identical final examinations set and marked by the IEB, regardless of whether they studied at a traditional school or through distance learning. Exams take place at designated centres under standardised conditions. The certificate is identical.
Is the IEB NSC accepted internationally?
Yes. The IEB NSC is internationally benchmarked as comparable to UK AS-Level standard. IEB Advanced Programme subjects are comparable to full A-Levels. IEB graduates are accepted at universities in the UK, USA, Australia, Canada, and across Europe.
My child is in Grade 7 — can they start IEB now?
The IEB applies to the FET phase only (Grade 10 to 12). For Grades R to 9, students follow the standard CAPS curriculum. CambriLearn's Senior Phase (Grades 7–9) is CAPS-aligned. The IEB pathway begins at Grade 10 enrolment.
What happens if my child needs to change subjects?
Subject changes are easiest early in Grade 10 before significant SBA marks accumulate. By mid-Grade 11, changes become problematic because students miss substantial curriculum content and assessments. Contact the admissions team as soon as you identify a problem — earlier is always better.
Are examination fees included in course fees?
Grade 10 and 11 examination fees are included — tests and internal exams are proctored online at no additional cost. Grade 12 final examination registration and fees are separate, payable upfront at enrolment, and charged per subject. Visit the pricing page for current fee details.
Can my child start mid-year?
Mid-year starts are possible but the IEB academic year is structured with cumulative SBA marks. Starting late means catching up on missed assessments. The earlier in the year you enrol, the smoother the experience. Discuss timing with a consultant.
IEB vs Cambridge — which is better for university?
Both are strong qualifications. IEB leads to the South African NSC, accepted automatically by all local universities with no exemption process. Cambridge A-Levels are globally recognised but require a university exemption certificate for South African university admission. If your primary goal is South African universities with international options as a bonus, IEB is the simpler route. If your primary goal is studying abroad, Cambridge may offer more flexibility.
What is the minimum entry requirement?
A minimum Grade 9 average of 70% is required for IEB enrolment at CambriLearn. You will also need identification documents, a full report card from the previous grade confirming a pass, and proof of age. Students transferring from other curricula may need additional documentation confirming academic history. See full accreditation details.
