Start with the right distinction

Online teaching and legal registration are separate checks

An online provider can supply teachers, lessons and assessment support. That does not by itself settle your child’s school-attendance or home-education obligations.

Your child’s education arrangement

Under section 51 of the South African Schools Act, as amended by BELA, parents choosing home education for a learner subject to compulsory attendance must apply to the provincial Head of Department. The legal definition allows tutorial or other educational support. Do not assume that using an online provider removes this responsibility.

The qualification and exam route

Separately, establish who teaches your child, who assesses them and who certifies or awards the qualification. Assessment-body registration, institutional accreditation and provincial home-education registration serve different purposes.

Confirm your family’s position before withdrawing

Ask your provincial home-education office how the requirements apply to your child’s age, grade and proposed arrangement. Section 51 has different provisions after age 15 or completion of Grade 9, whichever comes first. For an NSC route, confirm the required post-Grade 9 assessment arrangements as well.

In her 26 May 2026 budget speech, the Minister said work to recognise and regulate online schools was underway. Check current guidance when you enrol for 2027; a provider’s marketing description is not a substitute for that check.

The practical process

Six steps to switch with a clear plan

Confirm the receiving arrangement before finalising withdrawal. These steps are a planning sequence, not a promised processing time.

01Step 1 of 6

Choose the qualification and subject route

Start with your child’s current report, learning needs and likely next step after school. Compare the teaching language, subjects, assessment method and final qualification.

Decide together

  • Which subjects and level are appropriate now?
  • Will this route meet the requirements of a future school, university or training programme?
  • Who provides teaching, marking, reports and day-to-day support?

Check before proceeding

For an NSC route, CAPS is the curriculum and SACAI or the IEB may be the assessment body. A change of body or curriculum needs an individual review.

02Step 2 of 6

Check registration and the 2027 offer

Confirm the provider’s evidence and the exact grades available for the year your child will join. Resolve provincial requirements separately.

Ask for written confirmation

  • The institution’s current accreditation or registration evidence and its scope.
  • Your child’s grade, subjects, package, assessment body and intended examination year.
  • Who will make exam entries and where assessments will take place.

Check before proceeding

A 2026 certificate is not proof of 2027 registration. Use the accreditation verification guide and request year-specific evidence.

03Step 3 of 6

Agree placement, records and a start date

Have the receiving provider review the academic record before you commit to a move. A current report is a starting point, not a promise that every completed task will transfer.

Get the academic plan

  • Which prior marks and assessment tasks can be accepted?
  • What work needs completing or repeating?
  • What are the enrolment, assessment and exam-entry deadlines?

Check before proceeding

Ask for a realistic date based on document checks, course activation and your child’s readiness. There is no single reliable switching timeline for every family.

04Step 4 of 6

Give notice and collect the school records

Once the new arrangement is confirmed, write to the current school with the intended final day. Check the enrolment agreement for notice and fee obligations, and request the transfer documentation.

Keep copies

  • Written notice and the school’s acknowledgement.
  • Latest and year-end reports, plus subject and assessment records.
  • The transfer card or certificate, where applicable, and any existing exam-registration details.

Check before proceeding

The national admission policy expressly addresses transfer cards for public-school-to-public-school moves. Confirm the process for your school and destination instead of assuming one rule covers every provider.

05Step 5 of 6

Complete enrolment and confirm exam entry

Submit the receiving provider’s required documents and agree the fees, package and activation date. Keep a written record of what the provider handles and what you must arrange.

Before paying or activating

  • Check what the quoted fee includes and excludes.
  • Confirm access, orientation, live-lesson timetable and assessment expectations.
  • For private-candidate exams, confirm the centre accepts the exact subjects and components.

Check before proceeding

CambriLearn’s published exam guidance distinguishes its NSC registration arrangements from private-candidate entries for International British and Pearson Edexcel qualifications. Read how exams work.

06Step 6 of 6

Set up the school day and review the first month

Test the device and connection, plan supervised study time where needed and make room for movement and friendships. Build the routine with your child.

Make the first week manageable

  • Find the timetable, assignments, reports and support channels.
  • Practise joining a lesson and submitting a piece of work.
  • Agree a short parent-and-child check-in and a plan for technical interruptions.

Check before proceeding

Use the first-month plan below as a starting point. Children settle at different speeds; adjust support to what you observe.

Plan for the year ahead

Dates and decisions for 2027

Use the published public-school calendar to plan a move from a South African public school. Confirm your new provider’s own calendar and exam deadlines separately.

Term 1

13 January to 19 March 2027

Term 2

6 April to 25 June 2027

Term 3

20 July to 22 September 2027

Term 4

5 October to 8 December 2027

Learner dates from the Department of Basic Education’s published 2027 public-school calendar. These are not a universal calendar for online providers, independent schools or international examination routes.

A specific IEB planning point at CambriLearn

CambriLearn’s published pathway information offers IEB Grades 10 and 11 for the 2027 intake, with Grade 12 planned for 2028. The IEB Grade 11 English Home Language course listing gives 11 January 2027 for activation and 13 January 2027 for the return of live lessons. Confirm your child’s complete subject package and timetable before enrolling.

Check the Grade 11 course listing · Check the IEB exam route · View current timetables

For other pathways, ask for the applicable 2027 start date, final enrolment date, assessment calendar and exam-entry deadline. Do not carry a previous year’s cutoff forward.

Mid-year moves and senior grades

Can you switch mid-year without losing progress?

A mid-year move may be possible, but the receiving provider must first review the timing, subjects and assessment record. Ask for acceptance of prior work in writing.

Staying on the same curriculum

Ask which completed tasks and marks meet the receiving provider’s requirements. Compare subject choices, teaching sequence and outstanding work. Similar course names do not guarantee automatic credit transfer.

Changing curriculum or assessment body

Request a subject-by-subject placement plan. A change from CAPS to an international route, or between NSC assessment bodies, can affect content coverage, assessment evidence and the expected completion date.

Moving in Grades 10 to 12

Ask the receiving provider to check school-based assessment, practical or oral components where relevant, existing registration and exam-entry deadlines. Do not treat a Grade 12 move as confirmed until the academic and assessment requirements have been checked.

Keep the next destination in view

University admission depends on the qualification, subjects, results and programme requirements. For a foreign school-leaving qualification used for South African degree admission, check the relevant Universities South Africa exemption route as well as the university’s own criteria.

Prepare the paperwork

A document checklist to confirm with your provider

Requirements vary by provider, grade and education arrangement. Use this list to prepare, then request the exact checklist and certification requirements for your application.

Academic and enrolment records

  • Latest report and the previous year-end report.
  • Subject list, marks and relevant assessment records.
  • Transfer card or certificate, where applicable.
  • Learner identity document or birth certificate and parent or guardian identification, as requested.
  • Previous examination registration details and any approved access arrangements, if applicable.
  • Completed application, contact details and any further documents requested by admissions.

If home-education registration applies

Obtain the current provincial application requirements. The DBE guidance lists identity and school records, proof of residence, a motivation and details of the educational programme, with additional documents in some circumstances.

Keep proof of submission and the department’s response. Provider enrolment documents and the provincial application are separate records.

Verify the route

Understand what each credential tells you

Use the precise credential when comparing schools. The word “accredited” should lead to evidence of who approved what.

Umalusi

Certifies the NSC and accredits independent schools and private assessment bodies. Its published online-school statement makes a separate distinction about online providers.

SACAI and IEB

Assessment bodies for NSC routes. Confirm the provider’s registration, the grades and academic year, and your child’s assessment arrangements.

Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel

For a private-candidate route, confirm the exact qualification, subjects, components and an accepting exam centre. Teaching enrolment is separate from exam entry.

Cognia

Institutional accreditation. It does not by itself establish a South African NSC examination route or guarantee admission to a university.

For 2027 enrolment, request the applicable year’s registration evidence. Umalusi’s accreditation remit · SACAI provider register · IEB directory · Pearson private-candidate guidance

Budget for the whole route

Compare the full cost before you commit

Get a written quote for your child’s grade, subjects, package and start date. Compare the total commitment as well as the instalment amount.

Teaching and support

Check live-lesson access, recordings, marking, reports and teacher support. Confirm the number of instalments, activation rules, renewal arrangements and cancellation terms.

Costs beyond the course fee

Ask about textbooks, devices, connectivity, exam entry, centre charges, practical components, travel and any support you plan to arrange separately. Confirm which apply to your child.

A fee on a 2026 page should not be presented as a confirmed 2027 price. Check current CambriLearn pricing and request a quote. Read the current terms before payment.

Help your child settle in

A practical plan for the first four weeks

This is a suggested routine, not a prediction of when your child will feel settled. Adjust it with their teachers and your family’s circumstances.

Week 1

Learn the school day

Test access, locate the timetable and practise submitting work. Make a simple plan for lessons, independent study, breaks and adult support.

Week 2

Make the routine workable

Review attendance, unfinished work and the parts of the day that feel difficult. Ask for help early and adjust the study space or schedule.

Week 3

Check learning and connection

Review feedback together. Encourage questions in lessons and plan regular opportunities for friendships, sport, clubs or other interests.

Week 4

Review and adjust

Meet or message the appropriate teacher or support team if concerns remain. Decide which routines to keep and where your child still needs help.

Test your setup before the first lesson

Confirm the device, browser, webcam, microphone and connection requirements for the chosen programme, including any online proctoring. Test from the actual study space while other household devices are in use. Ask what support and catch-up options are available if power or connectivity is interrupted.

Questions parents ask

Common questions about switching

Is online schooling the same as registered home education?

No single provider label answers the registration question. Confirm the education arrangement with your provincial department, using your child’s age and grade. The registration section above links the legal provisions and official guidance. Assessment-body registration is a separate check.

How do I withdraw my child from their current school?

Confirm the receiving arrangement first, then give written notice with the intended final day. Check the school agreement, ask for the transfer documentation and academic records, and keep the acknowledgement. Resolve any uncertainty about fees or records with the school and relevant authority.

How long does it take to switch?

There is no universal timetable. Placement, document checks, notice periods, course activation and assessment deadlines affect the start date. Ask the receiving provider to confirm the sequence and expected date for your child.

Can my child transfer in the middle of 2027?

Ask the receiving provider to assess the proposed date, subjects and completed work before committing. Mid-year entry and credit acceptance depend on the route and the learner’s record. Senior-grade and exam-year transfers need particular care.

Does CambriLearn offer IEB Grade 12 in 2027?

CambriLearn’s published pathway information plans IEB Grade 12 for 2028. Families considering the 2027 IEB intake should confirm Grade 10 or Grade 11 placement and the available subjects with admissions.

Will an online qualification guarantee university admission?

No. Check the final qualification, subject combination, grades and the intended programme’s requirements. For an international school-leaving qualification, ask the university about recognition and any matriculation-exemption requirements before finalising subjects.

Can my child return to a traditional school?

Ask the intended receiving school about placement, available space, curriculum compatibility and the records it needs. Keep reports and assessment evidence throughout online study. A provider’s accreditation alone does not guarantee admission or a particular grade placement.

Where do I find the 2027 fees and start dates?

Use the current course and pricing information, then request a written quote and timetable for your child’s exact programme. Confirm course activation, live-lesson dates, exam fees and entry deadlines separately. Public-school term dates are planning references, not every provider’s timetable.
