Homeschooling in Cyprus

Cyprus law makes school attendance compulsory from pre-primary until a child completes gymnasium or turns 15. The Minister can exempt a child only for special and serious reasons.

What this means for families using an online school

For a child of compulsory school age living in Cyprus, an online school on its own doesn't meet the attendance duty.

  • Until gymnasium ends or age 15

    Attendance has to be at a school registered with the Ministry. CambriLearn isn't registered in Cyprus, so enrolling with us doesn't count.

  • The lyceum years

    Compulsory attendance ends when a student completes gymnasium or turns 15, so older students can follow International GCSEs and A Levels online and sit exams at the British Council.

  • Exemptions

    The Minister decides exemptions case by case. Apply to the Ministry and wait for its decision before relying on one.

  • Families who move often

    If your child's education needs to move with you between countries, speak to a consultant about where you'll be living, because the rules depend on the country you live in.

Cyprus's school system

Primary education includes compulsory pre-primary. Secondary education runs in two cycles: three years of gymnasium, then lyceum or technical school.

The starting age for compulsory pre-primary is falling in stages under section 8 of the law, and reaches four years for the 2031 to 2032 school year.

For the October/November 2026 series, first-time Cambridge entries at the British Council in Cyprus closed on 7 August 2026, with late entries until 14 September. Pearson Edexcel International A Level entries closed on 21 August and International GCSE entries on 4 September. A parent or guardian registers candidates under 18.

Paying for the year upfront costs 15.25% less than ten instalments. A once-off registration fee applies to new enrolments. Textbooks aren't included, and exam entries are paid to the British Council. CambriCommunity clubs, events and meetups come with every enrolment.

Can students with international qualifications go to university in Cyprus?

Yes. Public universities admit most students through the Pancyprian Examinations, and they keep a share of places for applicants with international exams such as A Levels.

University of Cyprus admissions

  • University of Cyprus

    An additional 3% of admissions from Cyprus can be sought with international exams such as GCE A Levels, by groups that include Cypriots living permanently abroad, repatriated Cypriots and foreign citizens. Departments set their own grades and Greek language requirements.

  • Private universities

    Private universities ask for a secondary school leaving certificate or equivalent qualification, plus the programme requirements in their prospectus.

  • UK universities

    Some don't accept the Apolytirion on its own. The University of Edinburgh, for example, asks for A Levels or the International Baccalaureate as well.

  • US colleges

    The American High School Diploma from Score Academy Online supports applications to US colleges.

Is homeschooling legal in Cyprus?

Not as a family choice. Law 24(I)/1993 makes attendance at a registered school compulsory until a child completes gymnasium or turns 15, and the Minister can grant an exemption only for special and serious reasons.

What is the penalty for not enrolling a child in Cyprus?

Anyone responsible for a child who fails to enrol them, or to supervise their attendance, can face up to three months' imprisonment, a fine of up to €1,000, or both.

When does compulsory education start in Cyprus?

With compulsory pre-primary education. In 2026 to 2027 it covers children who turned four years and four months before 1 September 2026, and the starting age reaches four years by 2031 to 2032.

Does an online school count as school in Cyprus?

Not for a child of compulsory school age. The law requires attendance at a school registered with the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth, and CambriLearn isn't registered in Cyprus.

Live lessons are timetabled in South African time. Cyprus is on the same time as South Africa in winter and one hour ahead in summer, so there's little time difference to work around. Lessons are recorded for students who can't attend.
