Homeschooling in
Zambia

Homeschooling in Zambia is not regulated or prohibited. The Ministry of Education does not govern home education, which gives parents the freedom to educate their children at home. Zambia's exam system is historically Cambridge-based: the Examinations Council of Zambia (ECZ) took over from the University of Cambridge in 1983 and still offers GCE examinations alongside its national Grade 7, 9 and 12 exams. International curricula are well understood. This guide covers the legal position, how to get started, curriculum options and costs.

Legal status

Is homeschooling legal in Zambia?

Homeschooling in Zambia is not governed or prohibited by the Ministry of Education. There is no specific homeschooling law, no registration requirement, and no mandated curriculum for families who choose to educate their children at home. The Education Act (Chapter 134 of the Laws of Zambia) does not address homeschooling directly, which means it is neither regulated nor restricted.

Zambia's public schools are free but significantly underfunded, particularly outside major urban centres. This is one of the primary reasons families in Zambia choose home education. Finding a good-quality school in remote and rural areas can be difficult, and private schools in cities like Lusaka and the Copperbelt are expensive.

The ECZ and examinations

The Examinations Council of Zambia (ECZ) was established in 1983 and took over the examining and certification functions previously handled by the University of Cambridge. ECZ conducts national examinations at Grade 7, Grade 9, and Grade 12, and also administers GCE (General Certificate of Education) examinations. The GCE route is particularly relevant for homeschooled students and adult learners, as it allows candidates to sit exams without being enrolled in a formal school. ECZ uses the Online Candidate Registration System (OCRS) for exam registration at school and district levels.

Emmanuel Home School Academy (EHSA). Based in Lusaka, EHSA is the main homeschooling support organisation in Zambia, helping parents across the country to homeschool their children. They provide curriculum guidance, community connection and practical support for families navigating the homeschooling process.

Getting started

How to start homeschooling in Zambia

1. Choose a curriculum

You can follow the Zambian national curriculum (leading to ECZ Grade 12 or GCE exams), Cambridge* International GCSEs and A-Levels, Pearson Edexcel, CAPS (South African curriculum), or the US K-12 programme. If you enrol with CambriLearn, the school provides the curriculum, teaching, materials and assessment.

2. Withdraw from the current school (if applicable)

Notify the school in writing and collect your child's formal report card. There is no government deregistration process for homeschooling.

3. Set up for learning

A quiet workspace and a reliable internet connection if using an online provider. Lusaka and the Copperbelt towns (Kitwe, Ndola) have reasonable broadband. Internet connectivity in smaller towns and rural areas is more limited, but mobile data coverage is expanding. CambriLearn's live lessons are timetabled with recorded sessions available for catch-up.

4. Plan for examinations

If following the Zambian national curriculum, register your child for ECZ Grade 12 or GCE exams through the OCRS system. If following an international curriculum, CambriLearn students sit Cambridge* and Edexcel exams at registered centres in Lusaka and other cities. US K-12 diploma students earn their qualification through CambriLearn's Cognia-accredited programme.

5. Connect with EHSA

The Emmanuel Home School Academy in Lusaka connects families across Zambia and provides practical guidance on curriculum choice, exam registration and the homeschooling process.

Curriculum options

Homeschooling curricula available in Zambia

Zambian families can follow the national curriculum or choose from several international options. CAPS is particularly relevant given Zambia's proximity to and ties with South Africa.

Zambia's exam system has Cambridge roots. Before the ECZ was established in 1983, Zambian school examinations were set and marked by the University of Cambridge. The ECZ still administers GCE examinations alongside its national Grade 7, 9 and 12 exams. This heritage means Cambridge qualifications are well understood and accepted by Zambian universities and employers.

CAPS is a strong option for Zambian families. Many Zambian families have connections to South Africa. The CAPS curriculum leads to the NSC matric, which is accepted by the University of Zambia (UNZA) and by all South African universities. CambriLearn's CAPS and KABV programmes are billed in South African Rand, offering a cost-competitive option for Zambian families given the ZMW/ZAR exchange rate.

What it costs

How much does homeschooling cost in Zambia?

Government schools in Zambia are free but significantly under-resourced. Private schools in Lusaka range from ZMW 15,000 to ZMW 80,000+ per year. International schools (American International School of Lusaka, Lusaka International Community School) charge ZMW 80,000 to ZMW 200,000+ per year.

University pathways

Can homeschooled students go to university from Zambia?

Yes. The pathway depends on the qualification held.

University of Zambia (UNZA) and local institutions

UNZA and other Zambian universities (Copperbelt University, Mulungushi University, Cavendish University Zambia) accept the ECZ Grade 12 certificate, GCE results, South African NSC matric (CAPS), Cambridge A-Levels, and Pearson Edexcel International A-Levels. Students apply through the standard admissions process. The ECZ Grade 12 and GCE are the most common domestic qualifications for admission.

South African universities

Many Zambian families send their children to South African universities (UCT, Wits, Stellenbosch, UP). The CAPS matric provides direct admission with no exemption needed. Students with Cambridge or Edexcel A-Levels may need a certificate of exemption from Universities South Africa (USAf).

International universities

Cambridge A-Levels are accepted in 160+ countries. Pearson Edexcel in 80+ countries. The US K-12 diploma (Cognia accredited, NCAA approved) opens the American university pathway.

CambriLearn graduates

CambriLearn graduates hold a 98% university acceptance rate across institutions in Zambia, South Africa, the UK, US, Europe and beyond. Over $25 million in scholarships earned to date.
