How online high school works in South Africa

Your child follows the same curriculum and writes the same exams as learners at a traditional school. The difference is that lessons happen online, at set times, with a teacher leading them.

  1. Talk to an education consultant

    Together you choose a pathway and subjects that suit your child’s grade and plans.

  2. Choose a package for each subject

    Pick a package per subject and mix them. From Grade 10, CAPS and KABV subjects are Standard or Premium.

  3. Register for home education

    Parents apply to the Head of Department at their provincial education department. We give you the documents the application needs.

  4. Start the school day

    Your child joins live, timetabled lessons in CambriCampus, and you follow attendance and progress in CambriCommand.

Applying to South African universities
An NSC is assessed like any other school’s. International GCSE and A Level results need a certificate of exemption from Universities South Africa, which doesn’t guarantee admission on its own.

From Grade 10, CAPS and KABV subjects are Standard or Premium. There are no uniforms or school transport to pay for. Textbooks are bought separately, and matric exam fees are set by the exam body and included in the calculator where they apply.

Who is online high school in South Africa for?

Is online high school legal in South Africa?

Yes. Home education has been lawful under section 51 of the South African Schools Act since 1996, and the BELA Act of 2024 amended that section rather than removing it. Parents register their child by applying to the Head of Department at their provincial education department, and we give you the documents the application needs.

Can my child write matric through an online school?

Yes. CAPS and KABV learners write the National Senior Certificate through SACAI, the same NSC that learners at government and independent schools receive. Umalusi quality-assures and certifies it whichever assessment body a learner writes with.

Do South African universities accept qualifications from online schools?

Universities assess an NSC written through SACAI in the same way as any other NSC, against their own admission requirements. Students with International GCSEs and A Levels apply to Universities South Africa for a certificate of exemption. 98% of CambriLearn graduates are accepted to university.

What happens during load shedding or an internet outage?

Live lessons are recorded, so a lesson missed because of a power cut or an internet outage can be watched afterwards. It helps to have a backup such as mobile data or a small UPS for the router.
