What to Look for in a Grade R Preschool Homeschool Curriculum

Grade R, also known as preschool or pre-primary, is a crucial stage in a child's development, focusing on foundational skills that set the stage for future learning. For those parents sceptical about traditional schooling environments, there are Grade R preschool homeschooling options available.

This offers a unique opportunity for parents to see their children develop and prepare for their formal educational journey at home, in an environment where they feel safe and secure.

In this article, we’ll explore what to look for in a Grade R preschool curriculum and provide tips on how to create an effective preschool learning environment within the home.

What Age is Preschool?

In South Africa, children can start attending preschool from the age of zero; however, at this stage, preschools are more commonly known as nurseries. From zero to four years old, no formal education is required. Children learn through play and exploring the world around them. They’ll typically start to develop linguistic skills, gross motor skills, and fine motor skills.

From the ages of four to six years old, children will typically start to focus on learning certain skills they’ll require to start their formal educational journey. This will typically include basic language and maths skills such as identifying letters, numbers, and so forth.

In South Africa, the preschool educational phase is divided into two grades; namely, Pre-Grade R and Grade R.

Creating an At-Home Grade R Preschool Classroom

Designing a Grade R preschool classroom at home is a heartwarming endeavour. To begin, parents should choose a quiet corner with ample natural light, allowing their children to immerse themselves in learning.

Furnishing the space with age-appropriate tables and chairs creates a comfortable and accessible setting. Nearby shelves and storage units can be arranged and stocked with colourful art supplies, educational toys, and a collection of captivating storybooks.

Crafting a consistent daily schedule that balances focused learning periods with playful breaks for exploration is important. Including designated times for engaging activities, healthy snacks, and restful moments establishes a sense of security for these children, and cultivates good time management habits from an early age.

By dedicating effort to creating this enriching environment, parents or caregivers gift their children with a special space where imagination can flourish. It's in this little corner of the home that children can embark on a journey of discovery, creativity, and growth, all while feeling the warmth of their parent’s support and encouragement.

What a Homeschool Lesson Plan for Grade R Should Entail

A Grade R preschool homeschool lesson plan should be well-structured, engaging, and age-appropriate, focusing on foundational skills and fostering a love for learning. Some of the subjects to cover include reading, writing, and basic mathematics. It’s important to ensure that children at this age have regular breaks as focusing for long periods of time can result in them experiencing frustration and exhaustion, and ultimately create a negative experience.

As for what to look for in a curriculum and what Grade R lesson plans should cover; the following three subjects and contents should be included in the chosen syllabus.

Language Lessons for Preschoolers

A Grade R language course should be dedicated to building crucial language abilities, with  special focus on listening, speaking, and reading. For young students embarking on their reading and writing adventure, a course should delve into the art of sound blending and decoding unfamiliar words by breaking them down into individual sounds.

Simple story readings will contribute to this journey, nurturing reading skills from the outset. By embracing a comprehensive approach that enhances listening comprehension, communication, and reading proficiency, parents can ensure that the groundwork for literacy is developed.

When choosing a curriculum for grade R, it’s important to ensure that it has been meticulously designed to include activities that help children grow and develop the invaluable skills needed to confidently articulate thoughts, and engage with the written word in a fun and engaging way.

A holistic approach such as this not only fosters immediate language growth, but also sparks a lasting enthusiasm for effective communication and a lifelong affinity for the world of literacy.

Math Activities for Preschoolers

A Grade R mathematics course should be designed to lay a strong foundation in numeracy and mathematical thinking. Such a comprehensive course encompasses a range of fundamental concepts, including numbers, patterns, shapes, measurements, and graphs.

Beyond these academic skills, a mathematics course should also place a significant emphasis on cultivating essential everyday abilities such as estimation, accuracy, and problem-solving.

While this might seem daunting and a little rigid for young children, a well-designed course makes learning these skills fun. Through interactive and enjoyable learning experiences, a course can equip students with mathematical knowledge as well as instil a passion for exploring the world of numbers and problem-solving from an early age.

Life Orientation for Preschoolers

A Grade R Life Orientation course holds a crucial role in nurturing a child’s development. Areas that should be covered include social, personal, intellectual, emotional, and physical dimensions of a child’s development. Such a course should also emphasise a seamless integration of these facets into their everyday lives.

At its core, this subject is designed to serve as a guiding light, preparing children to navigate the various challenges and prospects that life presents. By empowering them with a well-rounded skill set and a values-based foundation, a well-developed life orientation course ensures that children are well-prepared to lead fulfilling and purposeful lives in our ever-evolving society.

Therefore, such a course should introduce children to a diverse array of knowledge, skills, and values that are essential for their holistic growth and overall well-being.

Having Fun with Grade R Activities

Having fun with Grade R activities is pivotal for young students. These enjoyable experiences foster a positive connection to learning, setting a foundation for lifelong education. Fun activities inherently motivate children to engage, nurturing their curiosity and intrinsic motivation.

As they play and learn, their attention spans extend, aiding in effective information absorption. Beyond academics, these activities cultivate diverse skills, such as cognitive, social, emotional, and motor skills. Creative thinking, problem-solving, and social interaction all flourish in these settings.

Additionally, fun activities alleviate stress and anxiety, while parent-child participation strengthens relationships. As children relish in their achievements, their confidence soars. By having fun with Grade R activities, children forge a path to a joyful, skill-rich, and successful educational journey.

The CambriLearn Grade R syllabus has been developed to prepare children for the CAPS and British curriculum while encouraging a love for learning from a young age.
