Description

The AS Level Physics course builds on the skills acquired at Cambridge IGCSE (or equivalent) level. It includes the main theoretical concepts fundamental to the subject, some current applications of physics, and a strong emphasis on advanced practical skills. The practical skills are assessed in a timetabled practical examination. The entire course emphasis is on understanding concepts and the application of physics ideas in new contexts, as well as building on current knowledge.

The course encourages creative thinking and problem-solving skills that can be transferred to any future career path. This course is ideal for students who want to study physics or a wide variety of related subjects at university, or to follow a career in science.

AS Level Physics Course Structure

The course has been designed around 34 learning weeks.

Each learning week, consists of an introduction and an average of three Lessons. The introduction maps the online Lessons to the textbook and to the syllabus. It outlines work that should be completed in that week in terms Lessons, exercises and questions. Each syllabus topic is covered within two to four weeks, with few exceptions. The Lessons were designed to give a wholistic view of each topic, to enhance deep understanding and to help you develop higher order thinking skills.

Estimated weekly study commitment

According to the Cambridge International AS Level Physics syllabus, an estimated of 180 learning hours should be necessary to achieve the qualification. This translates to about 5,5 to 6 hours per week.

Assignments & Tests

During the course, students will be expected to complete six assignments. They are placed in-between learning weeks, and are based on questions from past exam papers. These have been created to help students get used to the style of exam questions and marking methods.

Just after Week 15 of the course, and after completing the second assignment, students will write a mid-course test on topics covered thus far. This is a one-hour test for 50 marks, and must be written under exam conditions with invigilation from a parent or guardian or tutor.
