Two assessments, for two different decisions

The Subject Choice Assessment helps with the subjects your teen studies next. The Career Choice Assessment looks further ahead, to study and work after school.

For Grade 9 and International GCSE students

Subject Choice Assessment

For students about to choose the subjects they will study next. The assessment identifies their core competencies and key motivators, then recommends a subject combination that plays to them.

  • Grade 9 students choosing their Grade 10 subjects
  • International GCSE students deciding whether to take A Levels
  • A recommended subject combination based on strengths and interests

For the final two years of school

Career Choice Assessment

For students in their last two years of school who want a clear direction for study and work. The assessment maps out a career pathway from their strengths, interests and motivators.

  • Grade 11 and 12 students
  • International GCSE, AS and A Level students
  • A mapped career pathway with defined academic and career goals

How subject choices shape career options

The subjects a learner chooses in Grade 9 decide which study routes stay open after school. Understanding the link between school subjects and career categories, alongside a clear sense of their own strengths and interests, helps learners make better career choices.

  • Subjects open and close career routes

Many degrees name compulsory school subjects. At the University of the Witwatersrand, for example, Mathematics is compulsory for the numerate degrees in Commerce, Engineering, Science and most of Health Sciences, while Mathematical Literacy is considered only for degrees such as the LLB, Education and the Humanities. Its engineering degrees also require Physical Sciences. See the Wits entry requirements

  • Interests keep a learner going

Subjects are studied for several years, right up to the final exams. Choosing subjects a learner genuinely enjoys makes the harder stretches easier to sustain, and those interests often point towards career categories worth exploring.

  • Strengths show where the marks will come from

University admission is based on marks in specific subjects, so choosing subjects where a learner is strong protects the results they will need. Knowing their weaker areas matters too, because support can start early.

  • Researching careers before choosing subjects

Checking the entry requirements of a few possible careers shows which subjects are essential and which are optional. It also tests whether a career still appeals once a learner sees what it asks for.

A formal assessment is one practical way to build that self-knowledge before making subject and career choices. Our Educational Psychologist measures strengths, interests and motivators, then recommends subjects or a career direction.
