Social and emotional learning (SEL) teaches children to understand their emotions and to appreciate the differences between people. Along the way it builds self-awareness, character and emotional intelligence.
The course helps children find constructive ways to process their emotions and treat others with respect. It starts from the idea that every child needs to be recognised and supported as they are, so sessions are built around a sense of psychological safety.
Four areas run through the 20 weeks, and children practise them together in structured group work.
Learning that each person has their own strengths and talents, and that they’re worth celebrating.
Practising constructive feedback and building a supportive atmosphere with the rest of the group.
Seeing differences and diversity as a strength, and building the resilience to handle pressure from others.
Understanding the part relationships play in life and at school, and how they support learning.
Each group meets online on Mondays and Fridays for 30 minutes. All times are South African time (GMT+2), so check them against your time zone.
