Sam, tell us a bit more about yourself and what you studied.
I originally studied Physics as an undergraduate, but I’m now doing a Masters in Sound and Music Computing! This has given me insights into many forms of audio technology, from creating hardware effects units to applying machine learning in developing song recommendation algorithms.
What led you to choose that course?
As well as my love for programming, I’m a huge fan of electronic music - so when I saw the opportunity to combine both passions, I just had to take it! I love the idea of developing tools for the next generation of musicians to use in creating sounds unlike anything heard before.
What is the best thing about teaching technology to young people?
I think my favourite moment is when I teach a concept to a student, and they then go ahead to do something with it that I’ve never even thought of before. Introducing an idea to a fresh mind and seeing it applied in new ways is very rewarding, and really shows to me that there are a lot of great innovations still to come.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Try a bit of everything – it’s the best way to figure out where your true interests lie. And don’t be dissuaded if you struggle with something initially, you will learn from the experience!
Why do you think that would be important for young people to join the Coding with Python course on CambriLearn?
Programming is a more important skill than ever before and is becoming a common asset in many industries. In my opinion, Python is an ideal first language to learn – it strikes a great balance between showing the fundamentals of coding clearly and concisely, while also being very powerful and used in many professional areas such as data science and web applications.
Who or what inspires you?
I think Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, is a really inspiring figure in technology. Not only did he create something which has impacted the lives of almost everyone on Earth, but he fought for this impact to be a positive one, making sure that it would be a freely accessible resource for anyone to use - something I think is still very important today.
What excites you about looking forward to the future and technology?
I’m a huge fan of ‘algoraves’ – live events at which people write code onstage to create an improvised music performance. I hope we see more creative use of programming like this in the future, to create new types of algorithmically generated art!
